GLENELG
- a hidden comer of the Western Highlands, visited only
by those in the know ... A truly inspiring place of
unspoilt beauty, of vibrant Highland Culture and of a
remarkable history, much in evidence. It is the place to
view the dramatic Highland landscape, to walk and climb,
to explore its antiquities and to observe the diversity
of its wildlife. As an alternative route to Skye it makes a
rewarding diversion. As a holiday destination it is both
an ideal centre for touring and a place of limitless
discovery.
A car ferry runs back and forward to The Isle of Skye - a 5 minute crossing from April to October.

The
other main attraction of Glenelg is that of its remarkable antiquities . . .
Here are sited Dun Troddan and Dun Telve, two of the
best preserved Pictish Broch Towers in Scotland. With
their high dry-stone walls and their intricate mural
galleries they are a testament to the skill of their
builders of 2,000 years ago. Here too are . . the scattered hill forts of the
troubled centuries of the Dark Ages and the ruined Hanovarian Barracks of the Eighteenth Century.

On
the quiet shore of the bay here, is as good a
place as any to observe the rich marine life of
the district and further inland the patient
observer may well see such rare species as the
Highland Wild Cat, the Pine Marten, the Golden
Eagle and the Sea Eagle. Even the less patient are
likely to catch a glimpse of the many Red Deer
which abound in Glenelg .
But it is the marine life for which Glenelg
is famous, the seabirds, the seals and
porpoises of the Bay and the Sound and most of all
the Glenelg Otters.
There are colonies of these playful animals
at both Kylerhea (where there is a hide on the
Skye shore) and on the bay and islands of Sandaig.
It is from the latter that their fame largely
derives, because this is Gavin Maxwell's "Camusfeama"
where his book "Ring of Bright Water" is
set.
